30 Days of Thankful

Another November has come and gone and the we listed out things we're thankful for. I really love this little tradition we started back in 2011. Its so sweet to make time to speak out the ways we've been blessed and notice all the good that surrounds us. Hearing things from Zachari and Jonathan's perspectives is really special too and often humbles me to remember to be grateful for all of the little things I so easily take for granted. 30 days of thankful

I really love the tradition we've started of intentionally listing out things we're thankful for in the month of November. Its made me more aware of all the little things in our days and I've found myself more easily giving thanks for even the mundane after practicing this so often. 

The Blinns have much to be thankful for and these are just some of the things that came to our mind last month. They're in no particular order, just how I weeded through the stack after all the tags were taken off the branches.

30 days of thankful

This is the fourth year in a row that, together as a family, we've taken time out in November to list things that we're thankful for. I'm so glad that we've started this tradition and a couple months ago, I realized that it meant something special to Zachari as well. She started asking if we were going to decorate the mantle with "our thankful things" again. This girl remembers everrrrrything, but this particular memory she had brought me joy. Maybe it'll be something we all cherish for years to come and who knows, maybe my children will pass it down to their children one day?

We often talked about what we were thankful for while we were eating a meal which is why several of Jonathan's have a food "theme".  This list doesn't even touch the tip of the iceberg as far as the millions of things this family can give thanks for. It is, however, a good reflection of where our hearts are right now in this season and for that - well - I'm thankful!

More birthday celebrations

On the 18th I was fortunate enough to get to celebrate my birthday - again - with some very dear friends. In what's becoming a tradition, I feasted on the deliciousness at Haiku on their beautiful patio. 


This year after dinner the girls and I headed back home where my amaze-balls husband had created a dreamy scene for us. White lights hanging in the bushes and the trees, white tealights hanging in mason jars all around the yard, colorful handmade bunting, a beautifully set table complete with a cheesecake sampler (a secret fave of mine!), smoked gouda with crackers, Oreos (!), and kettle chips. All things I love, all things I don't allow myself to get very often, all things my husband chose and then displayed with such care. 




And as if that wasn't enough, last night was my 25th birthday date with Dad. Wha??? We sat on the Patio at Tucci's and I enjoyed a divine glass of riesling with my scallops, salad and sides. It was a touch muggy, but that's August for ya. It was a nice evening for sure.


I love birthdays and I especially love the chance to celebrate mine multiple times. I am one very blessed woman!

A happy Thanksgiving

What a gorgeous day! I can't remember a more picture-perfect Thanksgiving Day. The high was around 60˚, there wasn't a hint of cold in the air, the sun was shining in a clear, blue sky. It was amazing and such a gift to be able to stand outside in a tank top for pregnancy photos and not freeze!

We're eight months into the pregnancy now, only two more to go! I've definitely had a harder time physically in this pregnancy, but its really nothing much to complain about in the grand scheme of things. At this stage in my pregnancy with Z, I only had a month left to go, but didn't know it. This time around, I'm banking on a solid seven to eight weeks left til Little One arrives. Here's hopin'!


Diva wasn't into the photo shoot today. She was much more concerned with the whereabouts of Miles and when the two of them could run through the ravine together. Sheesh! The priorities of an almost-three year old!


On the way back home we found a big pile of leaves raked onto the sidewalk. Z was thrilled at the chance to "walk" Miles through them. The picture doesn't show it very well, but the leaves were up past her little knees and she traipsed through them with ease!


Our Thanksgiving festivities were actually pretty enjoyable today, to our pleasant surprise. We slept in a little and Blinn and I enjoyed some French Vanilla coffee together while Miss Z totally ate up the Macy's parade on TV. I figured she'd enjoy it, but I had no idea she'd love it so much! She saw about an hour's worth of the parade and for at least twenty minutes of it, she danced. The Broadway Cinderella and the Rockettes seemed to be her favorite. Here she is dancing with the Rockettes and her papa and I were quite impressed with how well she imitated their moves! And yes, she's wearing a pink tutu, a bejeweled tiara, too-big rainbow pants and a Halloween jammie top. This is how she rolls. All. The. Time.



After our walk to the ravine for photos, we loaded everything up and headed to Grandpa's. This is always the family visit that I enjoy the least, but this year was an exception. Z did great there too. It can be pretty loud and overwhelming for even me and most times when we're there she clams up and no one really gets to see her true self. Today was a little better though and she held her own like a champ. She always makes me proud when I get to show her off to people who don't know her as well. 

After Grandpa's, we headed to the Mosleys' where we celebrated with the grandparents and Uncle Michael. A decent time there too. The best part was how happy Z was to be able to play with her cousin for a few hours. Its nice that she has little cousins so close in age to group up with. That was something missing in my childhood for sure. 

We certainly have MUCH to be thankful for and today I tried meditating on many of those things. This year's 30 Days of Thankful has been good and we've already come up with many more than one thing to give thanks for a day. As it says in Psalm 107:1 "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good. His Love endures forever."

Do not be anxious for anything

Today we met with the specialist again and for the most part, the visit went wonderfully! As the date of our visit approached, I grew more curious about how LIttle One was progressing and if Dr. Amburgey would suggest weekly or twice-weekly NSTs as she'd originally thought would be necessary at the beginning of the pregnancy. Of course I was leaning towards a whopping NO in response to those inquiries, but only time would tell. And this morning... time did tell. 

The thing I need to be mindful of is that Little One is alive, well, growing and looking beautiful. I'm healthy, the pregnancy is moving along well and I continue to be offered the most precious gift of all: to carry a new life to fruition and experience one of God's miracles first hand every single day. 

However, there was a little bit of concern in today's scan. Baby is growing well over all, but her or his abdomen area is about eight days behind the rest of the body, for some reason. I don't fully understand how something like this can be, but apparently, it is. Because of this, the docs in the office suggest twice-weekly NSTs and in addition to the every other week biophysical scans, they'll add in another less detailed scan of the babe. Lovely. Exactly what I was hoping we could avoid, but it will be okay. I don't need to worry or stress or break down... but what's sad is I already have today. 

I'm surprised (and disappointed) by how easily my faith in the Father has been shaken today. In almost an instant, the confidence and joy that I walked into the sonogram room with flew out the window at the tiniest hiccup in what I thought was the perfect plan. For months now I've been praying that Jesus would bring this child in His timing and not at the timing of doctors or Pitocin or anything else artificial. I've prayed that Little One would arrive in January and when I first began those prayers they were more like pleas. Lately though, they've felt more like speaking Truth over the child in my womb and speaking with confidence from God. So what happened today? Why did I let a doctor's change of plan sway me so easily? Why did my mind automatically shift to negative mode? Perhaps its my history of carrying babies. Perhaps its my human nature. Perhaps I'm weak. I don't know. I don't like it though and so I will continue to pray fervently throughout this day especially and seek first the Kingdom of God, not focusing on the ways of man.

Once I was home from the appointment I sent a text to Holly, Mandy and Kristina with a very brief update and a request for prayers because I was feeling so uneasy. I got encouragement and love right away which was wonderful. But it was Kristina's series of texts quoting Scripture and sharing from her heart that struck a chord and brought on the tears. Messy sobbing. For five whole minutes. And what a release! It was as though I needed to let out the tears so I could receive God's Word and His peace. I'm thankful for it.


Babe had the hiccups during the scan and we got to see him/her swallowing and sticking out their little tongue. Absolutely amazing! Hopefully the two videos below will work. 



"Do not be anxious for anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, by thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds by Christ Jesus... Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent ore praiseworthy  - think about such things."  Philippians 4:6-8

30 days of thankful

Last month I was inspired by this garland and decided to do a little something similar to it for our family this year. Its really important to me that my children know the true meaning behind the major holidays and this year was as good as any to teach Z the concept of thankfulness. I'm looking forward to many years of this simple tradition. Then, when I'm old and gray, I'll take out a big box of leaves and fall shapes and see how the things we were all thankful for changed over time.

Thanksgiving weekend ramblings

I am thankful. All week long I've had such good intentions about stopping to reflect on the last year and really give thanks. I've done a decent job about it, but getting to jot everything down hasn't exactly happened. 


Waking up so early on Tuesday morning was so good for me. The time alone, the stillness and silence at the break of day, sipping coffee slowly, showering at my own pace... I am thankful for these things. 


Our Thanksgiving weekend has been good, not too full or rushed which is a nice change. I'm thankful to live in Columbus for the holidays this year. Really thankful to get to celebrate with the MacCaugheys again too. What a dear friend I have in so many of them, but especially Bekah. Our relationship has greatly benefitted by our move and I'm so happy about that. Kristina and I continue to deepen our friendship and I'm loving that as well. Her sweet family of four is a gift to the ones I share a home with. I am blessed with rich friendships, no doubt about that. 


My BG years have come and gone, but at times I do really miss them. I learned a lot about myself in that town. I became a wife and mother there. I am thankful for the four years we were given in Bowling Green and for the chance to make a home out of our first house together. The few friends I made there are special ones and have been gifts to me. 


Good foods, good drinks, excellent company, nice weather, good health, gifts a-plenty. This has been a weekend to give thanks indeed.

Early-morning reading

Today I woke up around 4:30 a.m. to pee. When I crawled back into bed and snuggled up next to Blinn's warm body I couldn't get settled to save my life. After tossing, turning and trying hard to get back to sleep, around 5:10 I got out of bed for the day. Unheard of for me, but whatever. I quickly found the book I've been trying to read for the last two weeks and cozied up with my Snuggie and got a couple hours of reading in. What?! When's the last time that happened? It was great. 


A couple months ago Favorite Blogger wrote about how excited she was that this book had arrived in the mail. I was intrigued by the book's title and cover photograph. I reserved it from the library knowing hardly anything about it, but trusting the recommendation of someone who's thoughts I tune in on regularly. Today was the first chance I had to really dig into the text and well, its great. I didn't expect the book to be so God-centered, nor did I expect to like that about it, but its just what I need in this season of my life. I found myself jotting down quote after quote and reflecting on my own life so much that I made an impulse buy on Amazon and got a copy for m'self! I'm excited to get a little package of my own in the mail in the next week or so... and to really tackle the hard concept of living fully right where I am. The idea of being thankful for all things and living a life saturated in gratitude. This will be a process for sure.


Its fitting that I'm reading this now, a time of giving thanks and anticipation for good, new things to come. Sunday will be the first day of Advent, a time in the Christian calendar that Blinn and I have really come to love. I feel differently about Advent, Christmas and God-things in general this year. I'm thankful for that.

Holiday preparations

I'm feeling pretty good at the start of this Thanksgiving week. At a time when many are frazzled and hurried, I feel relaxed, well-prepared and in control. Let's hope it stays that way, eh?


Last week I got Christmas shopping out of the way. I was thrilled to be able to have money to give gifts this year. Last year was rough in the Blinn household and no Christmas gifts were exchanged, but this year we're in a better place financially. We're just exchanging gifts for the littles this year which meant getting gifts for our two nephews and niece. I found lots of fun stuff and could've bought lots more. We might do a couple other small gifts for special people in our lives, but that will most likely be online shopping so for the most part, I'm done with the craziness of stores for the year!


On Saturday I got supplies to make an advent calendar and our Christmas cards. If I believed in reincarnation I really think I'd come back in the next life as some sort of paper crafting thing. I could walk through aisles of 12"x12" scrapbooking paper every single day and not get tired of it. Put me in an aisle with stamps and fancy pens and paper punches and embellishments? Shoot, you better have lots of time on your hands because I can take for.ev.er. And oh, how I love Martha Stewart's craft line at Michael's. Again, I got some fun stuff and could have bought a LOT more.


This morning Z and I made dough for Gingerbread Men Cookies - some to snack on, some to use as Christmas tree ornaments. We also made the dough for Glazed Butter Cookies that we'll take to the MacCaugheys' on Thursday evening. On Thanksgiving morning (for my family's get together) I will make Green Bean Casserole, one of the simplest dishes to make. For Blinn's family meal on Friday afternoon I will make a new recipe, Apple-Cranberry Crisp.


The tenants who lived here before us left behind their 6 foot artificial Christmas tree so that's crossed of our list of things to do/get! As much as we'd love to have a real tree, it doesn't make a lot of sense for us this year and since there's a freebie in the basement, we're using it. I'll buy a candle scented like a live tree and all will be well. In addition to the tree, the peeps left about 8,439 strings of white lights. Score! I'm hoping to decorate outdoors in the next week or two and then get our tree up in early December. We've kept our decorations simple in years past and I like that. The items we've chosen to display have gone a long way as far as inducing holiday cheer.


He doesn't know it, but I bought the husb a small Christmas gift that I'll be readying for the next few weeks and if there's time, I hope to make him something m'self. (Ha! If there's time... Z has no concept of time as it relates to others beyond herself! The only reason I'm able to type this out is because she's currently in her booster seat at the table making a mess with drips of water from her water bottle. Meh, who cares?!)


Sunday is the first day of Advent and thanks to Landing Place days and the traditions deeply rooted in Blinn, its one of my favorites from the Christian calendar. As we continue to move towards the day of Christ's birth I want to focus - extra hard - on the things in my life that bring me joy and peace. Something that's bringing me joy and peace today, albeit rather shallow, is the fact that I don't stress at this time of year. For the last few years its been less and less about the commercialism of the months of November into the beginning of January and more about the true meaning of the holidays within those months. As we raise a little girl Blinn and I are ever-aware of how key it is to teach her the importance of Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany and I hope we're on a good path of doing that.
